On 6 June 1944, during the Second World War, more than 150,000 soldiers landed on the beaches of Normandy. With 133,000 arriving by sea and 23,000 by air, the Battle of Normandy began.

You can also visit the D-Day sites and museums, including Hill 314, the American cemetery, the artificial harbour at Arromanches les Bains, the Longues sur Mer and Crisbecq batteries and the Airborne Museum.

Famous throughout the world for its 11th-century tapestry and listed in the UNESCO "Memory of the World" register, Bayeux has an exceptional architectural heritage, dating mainly from the medieval period. Indeed, the city is famous for its half-timbered houses, its manor houses with towers, its elegant town houses and, of course, its famous Romanesque and Gothic cathedral.

Explore the charming streets and alleyways of this beautiful Norman town just a 15-minute drive from the Château d'Audrieu. Stroll around the shops and try out the many restaurants in the city centre.

The Bayeux Tapestry Museum is a must-see in the region. The tapestry is nearly 70 metres long, and you can immerse yourself in the embroidered story of the conquest of England in 1066 by William, Duke of Normandy. Visiting the museum allows you to see the Bayeux Tapestry in its entirety. You can get up close to it, and an audio-guide commentary helps you understand its history and production.

Port-en-Bessin-Huppain is a picturesque and authentic town set between the sea and the countryside, in the heart of the Normandy landing beaches, and only 25 minutes drive from the Château d'Audrieu

Nestled in a lush, green setting, this port city boasts a prestigious historical past. Port-en-Bessin-Huppain has evolved through various phases, serving as a military stronghold, a maritime hub, an oil port, and a commercial port. Now, it thrives as a vibrant small-scale fishing port and has left its mark on history.

Today, Port en Bessin - Huppain lives to the rhythm of the comings and goings of the trawlers... Its quays come alive with the tides and the return of the sailors who unload their catch to be auctioned.

The harbour basins in the heart of the port are lined with a variety of shops and businesses. The narrow streets, the typical fishermen's houses, and the efficient port facilities add to the attraction of this charming town.

From Ouistreham on the Vélo Francette to Suisse Normande, from Caen to the Normandy coast, from Deauville to Honfleur via Pont-l'Evêque or from Port-en-Bessin to the D-Day landing beaches or Bayeux, the greenways criss-cross Calvados and Normandy.

A better option than road biking, the greenway is a facility reserved for non-motorised travel: bicycles, pedestrians, rollerbladers and sometimes horse riders. These greenways are often built on the towpaths of canals and rivers, old disused railways or forest roads.

Only 30 minutes by car from the Château d'Audrieu, head for the water and the open air.
